Enterprises are moving fast — from AI that advises to AI that acts. Agents can open tickets, provision resources, reconcile invoices, trigger workflows, and move data across systems without waiting for a human to push the button. The efficiency case is obvious.

But here’s the question that rarely makes it into the product demos: who, or what, is actually accountable when an AI agent takes action inside your enterprise?

In most organizations right now, the answer is unclear — because the agent is starting to look a lot like an insider, but no one has treated it like one.

We Have Playbooks for Human Insiders. We Don’t Have One for Agents.

For decades, organizations have refined controls for human actors inside the enterprise — identity lifecycle management, least-privilege access, periodic access reviews, activity logging, insider risk programs. There are budgets, teams, and board-level reporting tied to these controls. They are audited. They are insured.

Now consider an AI agent that can access multiple SaaS platforms, call internal APIs, modify configurations, trigger financial workflows, and persist memory across tasks. That’s not really a feature. That’s a workforce identity — one with real access across systems and the ability to act on it.

Yet in many organizations today, agents are being deployed as extensions of applications or embedded automation scripts. They may inherit credentials from a service account. They may be provisioned by a product team with no formal security review. They often don’t have a clearly defined owner beyond the developer who configured them.

That’s the governance gap, and it’s widening as deployment accelerates.

The First Problem Isn’t Malice. It’s Inventory.

Before enterprises can govern agents, they need to answer a simpler question: how many do we have?

This pattern isn’t new. Shadow IT became Shadow SaaS. Organizations eventually learned they couldn’t manage risk or cost without an accurate inventory of what was running in their environment. Agentic AI risks replaying the same story, only faster — because agents can be embedded in workflow automation tools, CRM systems, DevOps pipelines, cloud interfaces, and customer support platforms simultaneously, often with minimal visibility at the enterprise level.

In that environment, “inventory” is no longer just a list of applications. It’s a map of autonomous actors: what they can access, what they’re permitted to do, and who is accountable for them. Without that visibility, the conversation about advanced controls is premature.

This Is a Governance Problem — and Governance Problems Get Budget

Part of why agentic AI security struggles to gain organizational traction is that it gets framed as a niche AI safety issue. But autonomous execution introduces risks that executives already have language for — operational accountability, access controls, and financial exposure.

If an agent can initiate transactions, approve access changes, reconfigure cloud infrastructure, or move sensitive data — the implications extend beyond the CISO’s office to audit, compliance, insurance, and financial controls. Even major platform providers are beginning to frame it this way, emphasizing that governance, visibility, and access control need to extend to AI agents before organizations scale them broadly. The message isn’t just “secure the model.” It’s “govern the actor.”

Boards don’t allocate funds because of hypothetical model hallucinations. They allocate funds when there is ambiguity around accountability, access, and control. Agentic AI introduces all three.

The Lifecycle Question No One Is Asking

One of the most useful thought starters we’ve come across for enterprise decision-makers is this: what does offboarding an AI agent look like?

For employees, there’s a process. HR triggers deprovisioning. Access is revoked. Credentials are rotated. For agents, most organizations can’t yet answer who reviews their permissions, how often those permissions are reviewed and certified, what happens when an agent is deprecated, where its memory is stored, or whether its activity logs are tamper-evident.

Letting agents operate indefinitely without any formal oversight may be acceptable in a pilot phase. It becomes far less acceptable at scale.

Why This Is a Category Moment for Technology Providers

For B2B tech providers, this isn’t just a risk story — it’s a category story. There is real whitespace emerging around non-human identity governance, agent inventory and observability, policy enforcement at the decision layer, and audit-ready activity trails for autonomous systems.

The vendors most likely to define this category won’t simply market “secure AI.” They’ll align agent governance with the enterprise control frameworks that buyers already understand — identity, insider risk, and operational risk management. The language matters: enterprises don’t want another AI-specific silo. They want to extend the governance frameworks they already understand to cover a new kind of actor.

Agentic AI is not just smarter software. It is a new kind of operational participant. And right now, most enterprises don’t yet have a mature playbook for managing that participant. The providers who help them build one may define the next phase of AI infrastructure.
