Optimizing the Retail Experience Through Mobile Prototype Testing
As retailers blend digital tools with in-store service, mobile experiences need to help customers navigate choices, compare options, and feel confident in the moment.
A retail client was redesigning a mobile app used within its stores. While the existing experience provided comprehensive information, customers often found it overwhelming and difficult to navigate.
The client wanted consumer feedback on three new prototype designs compared with the current app experience. The goal was to determine which design should move forward and identify refinements that would make the customer experience more engaging and intuitive.
Using a mobile testing platform, KS&R programmed and fielded a UX survey to evaluate three prototype designs alongside the current app experience. To minimize bias and reduce respondent fatigue, each participant evaluated only one design concept.
The study combined task-based usability testing with quantitative and qualitative feedback. Participants completed guided activities while sharing reactions through voice-over commentary. The evaluation captured task completion, time on task, heatmaps, usability and appeal ratings, open-ended feedback, and screen interactions.
This approach enabled stakeholders to observe how consumers naturally navigated the experience and identify points of confusion, friction, and engagement.
The research gave the client clear direction for the redesign, with 80% preferring the winning concept over the existing app. It also highlighted opportunities for further refinement, including expandable details and clearer terminology.
These insights helped the client optimize the preferred design to balance clarity, intuitive navigation, and visual engagement. By testing interactive prototypes before development was complete, the client could validate design decisions earlier, reduce the risk of costly post-launch revisions, and create a stronger self-service experience that allows retail sales representatives to focus more time on high-value customer conversations.
